Web Design by K-IT.ca Inc.

Today, and into the future, the internet is seeing a proliferation of sites. There are very few unique businesses, and most sites on the net will be competing for popularity with a number of similar sites. The majority of web site 'designers' are usually skilled graphic artists or multimedia specialists who have taken their skills into a computer environment. Most are capable of producing a site with tremendous viewer impact. However, if the site is not viewed by your marketplace, then the accomplishments of the designer are futile, and you have wasted your money. Search engines index a site based on the CONTENT of that site, not the way it looks. We are often dismayed by the fancy sites we find that have little or no content for the search engines to latch on to.

The internet used to foster the free exchange of information. Similar sites would exchange links with each other, and a true network of information was established. The user would find a site on a topic, and never have to resort to a search engine to find another.

Today, with the ratings game being played, the internet has become insular, and site owners have instituted false economies by submitting links from their sites, or by expecting others to pay for the priviledge of being linked. The net result is that sites are disappearing from view, overshadowed by the shear numbers of competing sites, and the search engines now reign supreme.

Search Engine position is today the number one arbitrator of site popularity. Even if you have an excellent site, if it does not rate high in the search engines, it will not receive very many visitors.

Publishing to the web is not the same as in print, or choosing a time slot on radio or television. On the web, your market actually defines itself to you. Users looking for your type of goods or services, or looking for shopping ideas in your geographic area, will use the many available search engines, and will look for sites like yours by entering keywords for the query to search on. The returned list of sites will guide the shopper, and if your site is not on that list, you will not get the business.

Plain text sites with high content will usually do much better than fancy sites with little content. For highest success, a site should be designed with two points in mind:

  1. the site content should be tailored to rank high with the various search engines for the usual keyword searches used to find similar sites, and
  2. the site should be easily navigated by the user, with lots of incentive to remain and view your site until a buying decision is reached.

Only then should the question of graphic design come up. Anything done by the designer should not, under any circumstances, reduce the content of your site or increase the difficulty of navigation.

If you are thinking of building a website, or are not satisfied with the business your site generates, we will be able to assist you. Is your site doing what you intended it to?

Examples of our Work

Recent work includes:

Frontenac Masonic District
A web hub for distributing information to the members of various lodges around Kingston. We have implemented dynamic tables, map links and a user-supported news system for the front page. The site also implements an email list-management system for rapid ad-hoc communications with the members.
Steves Truck Service
A simple static web site designed for a niche market. Easily downloaded because of small page sizes, text was tailored to optimize search engine placement for towing and service calls by individuals on the 401 Highway corridor from Trenton to Brockville. Site paid for itself within two weeks of launch.
BuyFromTheFarm.ca
An advocacy web site, designed to support a large community, and a wide range of web-based services. BuyFromTheFarm.ca incorporates site-wide keyword searches, blogging, user-contributed pages, and configurable views of information. Database-driven, it presents the largest on-line directory of Canadian Farmers Markets available on the internet.
Exspans Software
A software developer for large IBM mainframe installations, Exspans found they needed secure download and user validation on their site. This web application requires user registration with a valid email address, and restricts downloads of software to licenced users. Only single downloads of trial versions are permitted, and fraud detection has been incorporated. This is a simple presentation supported by a sophisticated back-end application.
Blackstar.ca
One of the longest existing websites on the internet devoted to body piercing, blackstar.ca is focused primarily on a learned approach to piercing aftercare. This is a complex site, with an active user forum, blogging, photo galleries, and a basic on-line shopping cart.
Beauchamp Fine Home Renovations
An brochure site for a builder specializing in renovations. Site is a work in progress, with plans for considerable expansion.
Roger Monahan Photography
A private blogging site on photography techniques and the work of Roger Monahan.

Content Management Systems

The newest trend in web sites is the Content Management System (CMS) which allows you the client to maintain the information on your site without involvment of the site developer. Once the site has been established, you are able to post timely items about your business to notify your clients about new services, specials etc.

The CMS is also used to establish user communities. K-IT.ca Inc. can develop a site for you which will allow your users to post feedback, ask questions, and generally help you to develop your site with the needs of your clients for guidance.

Feel free to try out our CMS Demonstration which is loosly modelled on an employment exchange site. Anything you post will be removed each night. See how you are able to add content, including photos, and call us for a quote on developing your site.

K-IT.ca Inc. Hosting Services

Our web hosting services are tailored for small enterprise with a low-volume dedicated readership. We offer a range of high end services to clients which are not usually available to smaller concerns.

Web sites have evolved into the new century, and the internet user expects more than simple page views. The user wants to interact with the site, from simple forms to submit requests for information, to forums for extended discussions on-line, to web-based applications like shopping carts, which bring the power of a full application to the users desktop. We have a number of pre-packaged solutions, and we welcome clients who wish to discuss custom development for applications to support their business.

If you need a Domain Name, K-IT.ca Inc. can register it and have your web site active the day you make the request. We will register your domain name, configure our servers, and have a default page with your business contact information available on the internet within 24 hours. (Usually available just after midnight of the day the domain is registered.) We do not believe in pages which say "Under Construction" or "Coming Soon".

We also offer a server side email system to keep personal email addresses off of the web pages. Our system prevents automated collection of email addresses for spam engines.

K-IT.ca Inc. provides the following for our hosting clients:

  • Four authoritative Name Servers, situated in three independent geographic locations.
  • Multiple redundant Web Servers with load levelling and failover.
  • Multiple redundant Mail Servers with failover.
  • Segregated FTP access, to prevent Web Server penetration through FTP.
  • Replicated back end Database Servers.
  • Daily automated back-ups, with weekly automated archiving.
  • Secure access to your web statistics, and monthly reports by email.

Our operating system is Linux (kernel version 2.6) and our servers can handle most web application environments. We believe in being 'hands-on' with our servers, and will not use pool services. If there is a problem, we fix it right here!
